Mindfulness: My first steps

I've been toying with this post for a few days as it is quite a personal one for me but also something i've seen more and more people talking about, blogging about and sharing on social media so it seems like i'm certainly not alone!

I remember first hearing this word a few years ago and truth be told, i thought it was just another corporate, rather patronising buzzword to try bring people's stress-levels down in a success-driven world. I'm the type of person that is always trying to achieve 110%, which very often leaves me emotionally and physically exhausted - mostly at the weekends, which i have a habit of sleeping away rather than enjoying some 'me time'. My mind is constantly on the go, from the moment my alarm goes off in the morning to the moment i fall asleep i've got, what feels like, a million and one things spinning around in my head. I work full-time for a global brand where i'm in my first year in a new role so constantly pushing myself, I am planning a wedding which scarily is now only 8 months away, we've recently bought a house and have lots of plans to make it our own, I have a burning desire to start my own small business, I run this blog in the evenings with plans to continue to make it better, friends and family that i wish i had more time to spend with...and that's before i take care of my health, cleaning duties, fitness goals, a new gluten-free diet, pinterest and everything else life throws at you on a daily basis.

Life is exhausting!

I travel for work a fair amount and a few weeks ago i was sat in Schipol airport enjoying a burger (no bun) at 9pm waiting for my flight to board when i spotted the latest edition of Flow in the magazine section. It was a special edition called Flow Mindfulness and luckily for me, it was the English edition too. In the last 2 weeks, this magazine has genuinely started to change the way i think about mindfulness.

Flow does not read like a text-book and it is not patronising in the slightest. In fact, if you love all things beautiful and paper-based, you'll love it just for it's design and added features such as snail mail cards, a diary and printed sheets of paper just waiting to be made into collages or scrapbooks.

For anyone who's as unsure as i was about what mindfulness actually means, here's one of the first sentences i read in the editor's letter at the beginning..

"Mindfulness is about living thoughtfully; not always being on the go and focusing on our next achievements, but rather looking at what is happening right here and right now. Enjoying the small things in life. Not always taking your own thoughts too seriously."

In my own terms, it's a calmer lifestyle for the mind.

In the first couple of weeks since reading through the first couple of sections and beginning to understand mindfulness, i've been starting to understand more why it's so important to step away from the high expectations i have of myself in everything i do, that it's okay to let my mind take a break every now and then. I'm only at the very beginning of what feels like is going to be a significant journey for me but i wanted to share this magazine with you as it really is both incredibly beautiful and insightful.

Iconic Stationery at Fox & Star

I don't very often stop to check through my junk mail before clicking 'delete all', however to my horror a Fox & Star email had somehow found it's way into the naughty list and was poised to be forever un-read had i not been distracted by 'New Iconic Stationery' catching my eye in the subject line!

I'm so pleased to have not missed this email as the new Iconic range, designed and made in South Korea, that has just launched on their website is absolutely beautiful! Patterned notebooks, sophisticated planners, vintage-inspired sticky notes and pens that were made for colour coding, there is no reason to not get organised this summer.

July Most Wanted!

Well somehow we've stumbled into July and everybody seems to either be jetting off somewhere on holiday or sharing Instagram-worthy weekends away in the sunshine. Unfortunately we're mid must-save-for-the-wedding mode so having quiet weekends with BBQs in the garden and quite a lot of gin!
Still..i can't complain about that!

One thing i can complain about though with this whole saving thing is my wishlist is now getting rather long! I wanted to share some of the most wanteds with you today - please do feel free to make me jealous if you've already got it ;)
